t has been a difficult week. The night of June 17 saw two executions, what we are calling the night of shame, followed by a third execution the next evening. The state of Georgia executed Marcus Wellons, the state of Missouri executed John Winfield, and the state of Florida executed John Henry. Three African American men were executed within 24 hours, and much about these executions was hidden in secrecy. These were the first executions since the botched execution of Clayton Lockett in Oklahoma at the end of April.
