Don’t sleep on student filmmakers, y’all. The New School’s Simone Maurice made the film “Lost In The Shuffle” for her thesis and has since been gaining traction in the documentary world. Following Emmy award winning choreographer and tap dance instructor Jason Samuels Smith, the documentary offers a glimpse into the history and erasure of West African slaves in the foundational movements of tap dancing, as well as the role Smith has in its revival. In an effort to create more interest in tap and its culture, as well as build Black solidarity, Smith has been providing free classes in his home, Jersey City, NJ. Stream the trailer for this beautiful work below and if you’re in NYC, there’s a showing of the full documentary at the Walter Reade Theater in Lincoln Center on Sunday February 5th at 1pm!
