What to the Slave is Your 4th of July (You-Lie)?

We Refuse to Accept Slavery

A MESSAGE FROM CARL DIX

What to the Slave is Your 4th of July?

Today is a time when immigrant children are being ripped from the arms of their parents on the US-Mexico border, when rights for LGBTQ people are under assault, and when police continue to get away with gunning down Black, Latino and Native people. It is a time when the occupant of the White House sees “fine people” among the white supremacist storm troopers who marched in Charlottesville last year and calls countries like Haiti, El Salvador and Nigeria “shithole countries.” All this makes the words Frederick Douglas spoke 166 years ago continue to resonate today. “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? … To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; … There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.”

In that spirit I urge you to join me at an Anti-July 4th picnic at the following venues:
• Chicago: “America Was Never Great Picnic”
Wed July 4 at 1 PM – 4 PM CDT 63rd Street Beach Chicago IL
• Los Angeles: Anti 4th of July Fundraiser: “America was NEVER Great BBQ”
Wed July 4 at 11 AM PDT · 700 Exposition Park Dr, Los Angeles, CA
• New York: “Anti-July 4 Picnic”
Wed July 4 at 1 PM EDT Marcus Garvey Park Harlem, New York

Contact us for details on other Anti-July 4th picnics being planned. Finally, if there’s not such a picnic planned in your area, then plan one. Contact us and we’ll help you develop some ideas for doing this, suggest some videos that could be played at it and some things that could be read. And be sure to write us if you do organize an anti-July 4th picnic or event!
